For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 ESV
UNICEF estimates that more than 250 babies are born every minute of every hour of every day. While it may seem a commonplace and simple fact of life, there is nothing either common or ordinary when our lives are touched by birth.
The birth of a baby! What a time of hope and expectation and joy! A moment filled with laughter, tears, embraces, kisses, and new life. Birth is a time of celebration. New parents are eager to spread their good news. Friends and relatives are full of questions. They want to know how much the baby weighs? Does she have her mother’s beautiful eyes? Does he have his father’s nose?
But this is no ordinary birth announcement: Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace? These are not the qualities of a baby. There must be some mistake. How on earth could a baby take the form of Mighty God? Surely, God would never stoop so low as to be born in human form. And yet it is true! Here through the words of the prophet Isaiah, is news of a birth that will touch our lives like no other. God the Father, eager to share the great news, sends a birth announcement long before the angels proclaim, “Glory to God in the highest; and on Earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
Today, when you hear the announcement of Jesus’ birth, will it be the news of just another common ordinary baby? Or will you allow this birth to touch your life? Will you see in Him, the one whom angels sing, and join with the rest of creation to shout the Good News:
“Hey! Unto us a Child is born!”
