“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44 (ESV)
I love treasure hunts. It doesn’t even matter if I am helping to search or the one writing and hiding the clues. It brings out the kid in me. The search for clues. The running from one clue to the next, always wondering if this one will be the one that reveals the treasure. The excitement and joy of discovery. Birthday presents, christmas gifts, cooking ingredients, aunts, uncles…they have all been treasures to be found.
Two great treasures…two great costs.
By far, the greatest treasure I have ever found is the Glory of God’s kingdom in the light and life of Jesus. Nothing else has ever brought me such great Joy! This treasure has not come without cost: the surrender of my pride, ego, and will to the care of God.
Just as precious to me is the growing understanding that I am treasured by God. Both the old and new testaments speak of God’s people as his prize. Indeed, he gave his life for us on the cross that he might redeem us for himself.
I would like to invite you on a treasure hunt. Right here and now! Are you willing to play along? There are clues hidden everywhere and all we need to do is look.
The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ. We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us. 2 Corinthians 4:6-7 (CEV)
We are the clues as well as the place where the treasure is hidden. Where is God’s light shining in you? How is God’s glory leaking out for the world to see? You might just be the only clue someone will ever read as they search for the greatest treasure: Jesus!
